The Jungle

The Jungle as it is known locally is an enclosed tupelo swamp presenting an appearance much like the famed Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia. On a much smaller scale, the jungle can offer a few hours to a full day of pleasant diversion for the paddler with little chance of losing ones way. The primary forestation in these waters is tupelo with some cypress growth near the forested boundaries. The waters themselves are heavily grown with fragrant water lilies in season as well as lotus plants and various grasses. This provides excellent habitat for summer ducks as well as the numerous wading birds you will see in this area. You can enter the jungle through an easily discerned opening about 1.4 miles south of the Henderson Guerry landing. A paddle of about a mile to the north after entering the Jungle will bring you to the black water canal that parallels the dike. All in all, a very pretty paddle and another bit of diversity shown in the waters of Berkeley County.
